Weather Shade

Brandon Sado

The Weather Shade is an architectural addition to Maui Mall designed to allow users to escape the weather by providing shade against the heat and the cold of the rain. The weather shade panels open in response to sunlight, and on brisker, rainier days the hatch-like openings shut.

Based upon the folding panels along the Al Bahar towers in Abu Dhabi, the Weather Shade allows for users to seek a wider space of shelter from rain or sun on Maui. Along the panels, hatch-like openings raise or lower with the breeze of the wind depending on the conditions. If the sun shines, the panels react, if it is rain, the openings remain closed, allowing users to observe an arrow like pattern running along the panels, while maintaining the functionality of shielding those under the panels from the weather conditions on Maui. Whether it be rain or sweltering heat, the panels keep users dry or cool depending on the day. The overall vision of the Weather Shade is to allow for a more pleasing experience at Maui Mall.

Hale ʻOluʻolu

Kevin Kahoohanohano

With Hawaii being in the tropics, it’s hot and humid year-round. Lots of things people do every day are in really hot environments. Hale ʻOluʻOlu aims to fix that. The Hale ʻOluʻOlu is a structure about the size of an average bedroom wall that can be customized, fitted, and redesigned to fit the user's desired space. It works as a control for shade and air(venting systems) by having movable, angled vents going in multiple controlled directions.

The Retractable Hangover

Dylan Almeida

The retractable hangover is a structure that is able to respond to different types of environments by providing shade from the harsh UV rays and protection from the rain as well. The structure is able to extend over the porch and also retract back.

On the top of the retractable hangover is aloy installations which is a type of metal that is able to respond to different types of climate. If it were to sense a cold environment then it would close itself up so that the inside of the porch would be protected by the cold weather. If it were to also sense a more warmer climate than it would open itself up to allow ventilation which would provide shade and a cooler area on the porch as well. The structure would benefit the users because it allows them to enjoy a good view on the porch while staying protected from super hot, cold, or rainy climates.

“The Utility Bed” The Utility Bed is an automated, multi-configurable bed. This bed can contract into a bench or desk depending on the user’s need while providing more unoccupied space.

With the Coronavirus Pandemic, people have been forced to stay inside their homes unable to go to work, school, or go outside. The bedroom has taken the place of an office or a classroom and has become a place where most people spend their time. Furniture such as a desk or chair take up space in a bedroom leaving it feeling cramped. The Utility Bed would replace those things which would also allow the user to have more space to utilize.

The bed is multi-configurable, it can contract into a chair or desk while it can also expand into a bed. Students who use the utility bed would have a bed to sleep in, a desk to do their work on, or a chair to sit on.

The Solar Window

Kamakanikaiaulu Chong-Enos and Kamakanikaiaulu Chong-Enos

Project Brief: The solar window uses technologies such as memory alloy. Memory alloy is a type of metal that is powered solely by the sun. Although using memory alloy for the whole window would be a bad idea because it would make the inside of the house extremely hot, so to counteract that the majority of the window would be made up of blind like material but would be powered by small amounts of shape memory alloy which would manipulate the shape of the blinds. The idea of this project is to make the user as comfortable as possible throughout the day. The blinds would be shaped like a fish's scales to create a unique experience for the user. Keeping the room cool as well as creating a unique light pattern within the room.

The Bleacher Covers

This project would help the people enjoy watching a game knowing that the sun wonʻt heat up the metal bleacher or knowing the sun wonʻt be beaming them while itʻs right above and not being worried about sitting in the shade. To make it more comfortable for the people instead of having plastic or metal above them for shade there is Lauhala being used instead. It is leaves from a type of tree this will be used to make the people more comfortable while watching so itʻs some what like there is a tree there providing shade as it usually would. Through this project I have really done a full process as my original design was much different because there was a back fence that would hold up the cover for the shade. I then realized the fence wouldn't be much of a support to the cover so I had to change it. This could be used just for sitting down and talking on the bleachers, but would usually just be used for whoever is watching a game going on from the bleachers.

Thermo Swimming

Amoi Rutherford Storm

Thermo Swimming is a colorful and exciting swimming experience made for everyone. The user can swim in an amorphous bubble at the beach and change the color of the walls with their fingertips. This structure is made with thermochromic crystals that show a colorful reaction to the temperatures of the people in the “pool”, the waves surrounding it, and also the water in it. This structure also has ribbons anchoring it to the seafloor. These ribbons have coral growing on them to promote the health of the surrounding reef and are detachable so then when the structure is ever moved the coral can stay.

Water Wall Warmer

Kale Spencer

The Vantablack Water Heating System is a system that takes light/heat from the sun and heats water for everyday use. This will heat the water and give users heated water for the household.

This project will be like a solar water heater, but can use all the heat it absorbs and will be very useful in heating water efficiently. This will be efficient in that the Vantablack absorbs 99.965%. It will use this heat to heat these copper pipes and create hot water for a household.
