4DC is a wearable device that filters microplastics from water ecosystems. As the wearer swims, the device collects and stores microplastics for later analysis and disposal while the user is in water.
Plastic pollution has been growing exponentially over the past several decades. There were 1.8 million tons of plastic pollution in the 1950s, and now there are over 465 million tons in 2018. This problem will continue to grow at this rate if humans continue to ignore the upcoming problem. If left unaddressed, this problem will have detrimental effects on the earth’s ecosystems and contribute to mass extinctions of the ocean and even land species. 4DC allows people to make a contribution to ocean plastic removal while bringing awareness to the vast amount of plastic in the ocean. It is the hope that this awareness will inspire humans to take action against one of the biggest problems they have created.
