Kohola Iki, translated to "small reef' is an animation that showcases the impacts that human carelessness has on coral reefs. The animation portrays the slow decay of the reef ecosystem from the perspective of a reef shark. It is the hope that audiences are inspired to become more conscious and aware of ocean habitats.
Coral reefs have been around for millions of years, and most are thousands of years old 85% of Americaʻs coral reefs are located in Hawai'i. Coral reefs are an important part of the Earth's ecosystem. They provide homes for marine life, provide half of the Earth's oxygen and take in a third of the carbon dioxide that humans produce. Due to improper treatment and neglect of coral reefs, 14% of our reefs have decayed over time, and more are to come. The intent of this animation is to provide awareness of the unjust actions that impact coral reefs, and to inspire the audience to take action.
